Fashion fans invited to ‘Take Off Your Clothes’ at Calgary clothing swap

Later this month, Calgarians will have the chance to exchange their unwanted clothing for others’ threads at the city’s sixth Take Off Your Clothes clothing swap. “It’s a bit of a win-win for everybody,” said Vanessa Erickson, co-director for the Calgary chapter and member of The SWAP Team.

Participants can buy a $15 admission ticket for the June 23 event, and can drop off their clothing pieces ahead of time or on the day of. Each article of clothing that is deemed to be in good condition and in style will translate into one ticket for the clothing’s donor to then use to pick out a new item. Remaining clothing is donated to charity.

“It’s our goal to have 6,000 pieces of clothing,” said Erickson. While the swap is generally mostly women’s clothing, Erickson said there will be a men’s section. Kids’ clothing is not accepted. Take Off Your Clothes will be held at Balmoral School at 220 16 Avenue N.W. from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Elegance for Education fashion show features clothes from Coplon’s

Sisters Ellen Rucker Carter, Ruby Rucker Cooper and Ione Rucker Jamison were the hosts of Elegance for Education, a fabulous fashion show fundraiser for the Rucker Education Scholarship Fund that was held at a private home at the Club at Longview in Weddington. The 200 guests gathered outside by a pool to view an array of designer clothes from Coplon’s at Phillip’s Place.

The showing was organized by store manager Jordan McGee. Proceeds will go to a scholarship at A.R. Rucker Middle School in Lancaster, S.C., that will be given to a student who aspires to be the first person in his or her family to attend college. An insider at the event told me that a crew from the WE channel was there filming the fundraiser for “The Ruckers: Southern Royalty,” a new reality show debuting this fall that follows the lives of the three gorgeous Rucker sisters who are from a successful business family in Lancaster County.

Fashion writer Suzy Menkes to sell her own clothes online

Suzy Menkes, doyenne of the fashion press, says she plans to auction off part of her own label-strewn wardrobe at a two-week online sale in July. The International Herald Tribune fashion editor, a regular on the front row at catwalk shows of the world's top designers from Giorgio Armani to Diane von Furstenberg, will open bids for 80 lots of clothes on July 11 in the Christie's sale.

"I have never thrown anything out of my wardrobe since 1964," she said in a statement on Tuesday. Menkes will sell coats, dresses, skirts, tops, jackets and accessories that she has laid in a "tomb of trunks" from designers such as Ossie Clark and Emilio Pucci, to Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix.

"They need to live again and this auction provides the opportunity for them to walk out in the sunshine, to dance the night away and to give someone else the joy that they gave to me," she said. Estimates for individual lots start at 200 pounds ($300), with the majority on offer for under 1,000 pounds. The star lot of the sale is an Yves Saint Laurent cocktail jacket from his 1980 collection 'le soleil' estimated at up to 2,000 pounds.

Menkes follows in the footsteps of British designer Vivienne Westwood, fashion trendsetter Daphne Guinness, English model Erin O'Connor and Italian fashion writer Anna Piaggi by selling much of her collection via a single-owner auction at Christie's. The New York Times Co, which owns the Herald Tribune said earlier this year that it would be rebranding the paper as the International New York Times.

Paris Hilton, And Her Handbags, Adored In Colombia

Paris Hilton’s popularity may have cooled in the States, but she is one hot star in Colombia. And it has nothing to do with sex tapes. The high-flying socialite, who made a name for herself in the reality television circuit and because of her sexual escapades, has visited children’s hospitals in Colombia and even opened one of her fashion stores in the country’s capital, Bogota.

“I had heard many things about this country, like that it has very beautiful and sexy women, and they are the ones who will adore my handbags," she told The Associated Press. What she doesn’t want to be in Colombia is misunderstood, like she says she is in America.

She claims people assume she’s spoiled because she comes from a wealthy family – but she said she works hard in her own right. “I’m surprised people don’t believe that I’m a person who is normal and intelligent,” she said.

Apple Reportedly Testing 1.5-Inch OLED Displays for Smart Watch

Japanese blog Macotakara points to a pair of reports in today's edition of Taiwanese newspaper Economic Times addressing rumors surrounding Apple's smart watch effort. According to the first report [Google translation], Apple has begun sampling 1.5-inch OLED displays from RITEK subsidiary RiTdisplay. The report also claims that RITEK's joint venture RitFast will be supplying the touch sensor technology for the watch.

Today's report echoes a December claim about Apple's plans for RiTdisplay's 1.5-inch displays and word that Intel is involved in Apple's effort, but includes a detail indicating that Apple had originally hoped to use a 1.8-inch display in the smart watch. That display, however, proved to be too large and the company shifted to the smaller 1.5-inch display size. The second report [Google translation] offers an overview of the smart watch industry, with "market rumors" indicating that Foxconn has already received orders for Apple's smart watch.

But with order volumes said to be around 1,000 units, the production run would clearly be a small-scale trial. Rumors of an Apple smart watch ramped up in the months following that December report about Apple and Intel working together, with The New York Times later reporting that Apple was "experimenting" with curved glass smart watch designs and Bloomberg following up to claim that Apple has 100 product designers working on the project. "iWatch" rumors peaked in February and March of this year amid claims that the device could launch "as soon as this year", but things have been relatively quiet for the past several months.

Big Three Nets Trumpet Wall Street Protesters 'Proclaiming Victory'

ABC's Good Morning America
07:02 am

JOSH ELLIOT: And we're going to begin there on Wall Street. The breaking news now about the protest there. The protesters refusing to budge this morning as police did threaten to move in and clear them out. ABC's Cecilia Vega is there. And Cecilia, we actually again just heard now that police have postponed the deadline for the crowd to actually move.

CECILIA VEGA: Yes, Josh, there are several hundred protesters out here this morning. And what had been an extremely tense situation quickly turned celebratory when word came down that they don't have to clear out of this park. As you said, these protesters had been preparing for this 7 a.m. deadline to move out. The property owners of this park said they had to leave because this park needed a good cleaning – a power-washing, actually, after four weeks of camping out here. They said this park had become unsanitary.

Now protesters were refusing to leave, police were on stand-by, ready to move in. But as you said last night, the protesters spent the entire evening cleaning this park themselves, hoping to avoid a stand-off. There is tension here in New York City, but it appears there is tension mounting all around this country now, with police in Denver moving in overnight in riot gear on protesters. 10 arrested overnight in Seattle. Back here again in New York City, the scene is a celebratory one. The clean-up goes on. Protesters are chanting that the people of Wall Street will not be defeated, and it appears, Josh, that occupation will go on.
